Half Oz Gold Krugerrand
Displayed to the left is a large picture of my personal 1/2 oz gold South African Krugerrand. As you may know from my introduction to South African Krugerrands, I'm a huge fan of this coin. Why? There are just so many reasons but mostly the history, availability, and weight. The Krugerrand is the original gold bullion coin, the history is undeniable. As such, Krugerrands are extremely liquid and "available" - you can buy and sell them at all reputable gold stores worldwide. Last, Krugerrands are 22 karat gold bullion coins meaning they are alloyed with some other metals such as copper to keep them strong and resist denting and scratching that one may experience with the Gold Buffalo and Gold Maple Leaf. But, these are all generic reasons that I discussed in my last article about Krugerrands. Why do I like the 1/2 ounce variety so much? I'll spend the rest of today's article on that topic!

The Half Ounce Krugerrand Is Rare

I drop by my local coin shop every few weeks to see what they have. It is very rare that I see them carrying the 1/2 Oz Gold Krugerrand, it's a "rare" gold bullion coin. As you may know from my prior articles, my personal portfolio has a strong bias towards bullion coins (instead of numismatics). However, even within the field of bullion, I get a huge kick out of owning all the different bullion coins, including the fractional gold coins. The half ounce South African Krugerrand is a relatively rare fractional gold coin and one that's very fun to collect.

The 1/2 Ounce Gold Krugerrand Makes Sense With Today's Gold Price

The price of gold has been really strong, coming in around $915 per ounce as I write this article. In my personal opinion (and I'm certainly not an expert and am not a financial advisor), the current price of gold is very low and will go much higher. As the price continues to flourish, fractional gold bullion coins will be very sought after. They will be within reach of many more gold investors and consequently will only carry a higher premium over their larger counterparts as time goes on.

The 1/2 Oz Krugerrand Is A Perfect Store of Luck

I truly believe gold coins bring good luck. I believe this enough that I actually carry a gold coin with me each and every day in my briefcase. Knowing that the coin is there gives me great confidence in face of a bad economy and stressful job. Which gold coin do I carry with me each day? You got it! It's my 1/2 ounce Gold Krugerrand. Containing about $450 of gold bullion, I feel good about carrying this coin with me. The one ounce variety, however, would be too much for my personal tolerance these days. The one ounce coin is in my safe deposit box category. With times this tough, buy yourself some good luck and pick up your own half ounce Krugerrand!
