I'm excited about today's article because I'm venturing into a new topic I have not discussed before: collecting old paper money notes, namely silver certificates. Below, you will see to really large images of my beautiful 1957 United States One Dollar Silver Certificate. It looks just like a normal one dollar bill. However, when you look a bit closer, you can see that it says, "Silver Certificate" at the top. Moreover, it says, "One Dollar In Silver Payable To The Bearer On Demand" on the bottom. How cool is that! This silver certificate note is living proof that the United States dollar used to be backed with real silver bullion. If you look at a current dollar bill, you'll notice something quite different. It now says, "Federal Reserve Note" instead! Whereas the old silver notes were real money, current dollar bills (and all US paper currency) are fiat money.

I Bought My Silver Certificate From

As you may know from my review of Gov Mint, I'm a huge fan of this awesome coin shop! I have purchased a variety of coins from and have always been very happy. These guys are running a world class operation. Thus, in my first attempt at breaking into the paper money collectibles market, I knew that would be my natural choice. My bill arrived in absolute mint condition nicely wrapped in a plastic sleeve. It's now on display on my bookshelf next to my desk and I'm hoping to get it framed sometime soon to display on my wall. Whether you're buying silver certificates, collectible coins, gold bullion, or almost anything I cover on this site, I highly recommend GovMint - you will not be disappointed! Just check out the pictures below to see the beauty of my silver note.

Should You Collect Silver Certificates & Old Paper Notes?

This is a really important question. In my humble opinion, no. Don't get me wrong. I love my silver certificate and may even buy more in the future. However, these paper notes will never be at the core of my collection. I'm all about owning tangible physical gold and silver bullion. There is real value in precious metals and they will always retain value. You can quickly get a flavor of my passion for gold bullion from my top reasons to buy gold. In contrast, paper notes are just that - paper! While they're incredibly cool for historical purposes and the "collectible" appeal, they don't have intrinsic value like precious metal bars and coins. As you may know, I really like diversifying and having an interesting collection. This silver note allows me to do just that. However, the core of my portfolio will always involve physical bullion.
