The one ounce American Eagle silver dollar is one of the best ways to invest in silver bullion. Not only does this coin look fabulous, but it's also backed by the United States government and guaranteed to include one troy ounce of silver. The American Eagle pictured to the left includes one troy ounce of silver and you can currently find this coin for around $15-$20 depending on coin dealer mark up. A great way to invest in silver eagles is to purchase mint tubes that each include 20 coins factory sealed from the US Mint. You can sometimes get a slight discount buying the tubes versus the coins directly due to bulk discount. The tubes come in a semi-clear case with a green US Mint top. It's really amazing to hold a tube of 20 silver coins in your hand.

Buy Silver and Gold Coins

While this site is all about gold, I am also a proponent of silver for several reasons, with the most important being the doomsday scenario. Let's say the economy goes under and the US dollar becomes worthless. In this horrible scenario, precious metals that have intrinsic value will be used to pay for all sorts of goods and services. Gold coins are very valuable and will be used for large purchases. 1/10 ounce gold coins and also silver bullion coins will be used for smaller purchases. For this reason, I highly recommend complementing your gold bullion portfolio with silver bullion as well. Silver American Eagles are one of the best ways to get started investing in silver coins.

Storing Silver Coins

One of the difficult things about investing in silver is you need many more coins to equal the same value as just one gold coin. Consequently, storage may become an issue. Whereas it's easy to place a few gold coins in a safe deposit box, it's not so easy to store silver coins because they take up much more space. My compromise? Invest in some silver eagles that you can easily store in your safe deposit box an then complement this investment with some shares in your favorite silver exchange traded fund.

A closing thought: Silver Eagles make a terrific gift. Read the following article for more information on giving the gift of gold and silver.
